So, Rodney, When and how did you start training?

I always played sports in school. I played basketball, football, and ran track so I was always athletic and thin. Once I graduated high school I would workout off and on, but never really stuck with it. It wasn’t until after a few years of college when I started focusing on weight training hardcore. I fell in love with it, so I decided to focus and commit myself to the lifestyle. Realistically, I got tired of being small. I learned that eating and weight training was the blueprint to gaining weight, and I put on about 20 pounds within the first year.

After a few years reading and learning more and more about fitness I decided to make it a career. I immediately looked into a Personal Training certification and was certified shortly after. After that I was working at the local YMCA. I personally trained and instructed fitness classes at ‘the Y’ for a short time then moved on after I got a job offer to manage a Stay Fit 24 gym; there, I continued personal training.

I have worked for Stay Fit 24 for the last three and a half years. I put my conditioning and fitness to the test by playing Semi Pro football two years ago. I was starting Safety. I had fun, and despite my success, I called it quits and set my mind on competing in the new NPC category, Men’s Physique.

My first show was June 2012. I placed 3rd and then won two in a row right after. With those two wins, I became Nationally qualified and able to try for a Pro Card. I made my National debut at NPC Nationals in Atlanta, GA this past November and place 7th out 48 in my class with 150 total competitors. They handed out Pro Cards to the top two in each class. I had came up short (but not to. bad my very first National Show). I now have my eyes set on Jr. Nationals 2013 to try for that Pro Card once again.


Free weights or machines? What’s your preference?

I am a believer in keeping your routine fresh. It doesn’t matter whether you use free weights or machines as long as you keep challenging and shocking your muscles. I probably use free weights more often because of the creativity aspect, but I definitely use machines too.

What personal workout routine has yielded the best results for you?

I typically do three or four sets of 8-12 reps per exercise, but I try to keep it fresh and my muscles guessing by occasionally going higher into the 12 to 15 rep range and sometimes even 15-20. Every-once-in-awhile I also go lower with five to eight range. I rarely ever do max sets.

What is your favorite workout and body-part to train?

I love press exercises. Chest Press, Leg Press, Shoulder Press. I would say Chest would be my favorite body-part to train.


What does the Rodney Razor cardiovascular routine consist of?

I usually do my cardio first thing in the morning while my blood sugar levels are low. I get up, have a little black coffee and a half scoop of protein and head to the gym. I usually pick from running sprint intervals on the treadmill, the elliptical, Plyometrics, or HIIT style exercises. I may even do a combination of a few. I just like to shock my body and keep it guess with whatever I do. I also like to do cardio after my weight training routine in the evenings. The weight training being done first burns glyclogen with is necessary to burn stored fat during my cardio session.


We all experience days when we’d rather stay home and skip out on a Workout. What keeps you motivated and focused?

Wanting to be the best keeps me motivated. I guess it’s my competitive nature. I just know that when I’m not in the gym busting my butt that someone else is, and that very person may just be at my next competition.


What does your diet consist of? Any favorite cheat foods?

I typically eat between 6 and 8 meals a day with a 2-3 hour gap in between each one. For my protein source those meal consist of either baked or grilled boneless chicken breast or fish. I enjoy extra lean ground beef and ground turkey. I also gotta have my protein shake bare minimum when I first wake up, pre and post workout. My carb sources consist of green veggies, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, brown rice, red potatoes, and occasionally 100 percent whole grain and whole wheat breads and pastas. I try to stay away from as much gluten as possible.

I eat carbs earlier in the day and slowly taper them off and intake good fats as the day goes on. I try to only spike my insulin with high glycemic index item post work. I keep my water intake between a half to a full gallon of water daily and I allow myself one or two cheat meal a week. I am a sucker for pizza and juicy burger :)

How do you fend off your cravings for junk food, salt, or other unhealthy foods?

I look at [my cheat meals] as a treat for myself — an award for my hard work. I don’t fight my cravings,  I make sure I have those type of foods at least once (sometimes twice) a week. It Keeps me sane and focused.


What supplements do you use? (If any.)

I make sure that I take a good multi-vitamin, fish oil, and B-Complex daily and one supplement that is an absolutely must is whey protein. I’m a huge fan of whey protein powders that include egg and casein protein. I drink a few shakes a day. I also like to incorporate an amino supplement from time to time.


What are your current fitness goals?

To win a Pro Card in Men’s Physique this year!


What do you listen to when you Workout?

I love hip-hop and R&B. I prefer an uptempo style with a good beat to get me hyped.  Some of my favorite artists to listen to are Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Future, Usher, Trey Songz, and Chris Brown

How have you benefited most from your fit and healthy lifestyle?

Looking and feeling great is an amazing benefit!  Being fit and ‘walking the walk’ also really helps me as a Personal Trainer. You have to be walking advertisment for your services. You can’t preach fitness and help others if you’re not together yourself. I live it because I love it. And let’s face it…how many people walk into the gym and choose the out of shape trainer. lol

What 3 tips would you give someone wishing to obtain a beyond ordinary physique like yours?

#1 Your diet is everything! Without the proper diet you’re wasting your time in the gym.

#2 Cardio. Gotta have cardio in your routine because getting that heart rate up by doing cardio helps burns body fat

#3 Consistency and dedication. If you honestly and fully put the work in, you physique will tell the world!

If you want to be the best, you have train like your the best! If you want to be extraordinary the key word is EXTRA. Push yourself and challenging your muscles beyond what they’re used to. I run into so many people that say they don’t get sore after a workout anymore. My response is that they’re not challenging and pushing the muscle with new intense stuff. You don’t have be able to lift the house, if rocking it burned you out completely thats a job well done!


What are you doing when you’re not working out?

I am currently pursuing my MBA at Bethel College. I also love spending time with my family. My son is almost seven and really into sports (he prefers basketball).

I spend a lot of my free time training, working with him, and attending his games. I too enjoy playing basketball and flag football. I’m a huge NBA, NFL, and college football/baskeball fan, so I spend a good amount of time in from of the TV yelling.
